06-12-2023

More than 20 professionals participated in a workshop on data management for educational improvement organized by the Directorate of Public Education, in partnership with Fundación Educacional Arauco, Fundación Educacional Oportunidad, Instituto Natura and the Center for Advanced Research in Education (CIAE) of the University of Chile.

On Friday, December 1, the workshop "Exchanging experiences of data analysis for educational improvement" was held, aimed at professionals of Local Education Services in order to recognize and reflect on the key dimensions for the use of data and decision-making, mainly in the processes of elaboration of the Local Annual Plan.

The workshop was attended by the Local Public Education Services (SLEP) Andalién Sur, Costa Araucanía, Chinchorro, Colchagua and Huasco, in addition to the new SLEP Maule Costa.

The topics that were worked on were, first, the experiences, learnings and challenges of SLEP professionals in the dimensions of infrastructure and culture within data management processes and, secondly, the analysis of the indicators of the local annual plans. Both with the aim of contributing to the understanding and integration of the infrastructure and culture of data use in the processes and practices of SLEPs.

The executive director of the Local Public Education Service Andalién Sur, Gonzalo Araneda, highlighted the call made by the Directorate of Public Education to bring together different local services, around a topic as relevant as the analysis of data for educational improvement, which the local services of the country work permanently to achieve the objectives that the law has entrusted to them.

"We are grateful for the active participation of public education collaborators who have been present from the beginning in each of the territories, such as the CIAE of the University of Chile, the Arauco Educational Foundation, the Opportunity Educational Foundation and also the Natura Institute, which, through the work of their teams, have managed to link individual and collective actions in each of the territories to generate a development of the capacities of the different teams of the country's public education," he said.

And he added: "One of the characteristics that Andalién Sur highlights has been the collaborative work carried out since the entry into operation of this service, through the link with actors such as the CIAE and the Arauco Educational Foundation. And, based on the experience we have achieved, we have collected during all these years and the strategies to generate data analysis in order to improve the attendance and connection that students have with their school; We understand that this experience has allowed us to be a venue to share with other local services."

For his part, Waldo Vergara, in charge of the management control unit of the public education service of Chinchorro, also thanked the invitation and indicated that "it is an instance that is highly valued, since it is possible to collect valuable experiences. One learns by seeing that other local public education services that have the same challenges and deficiencies, develop initiatives that we do not see because we are far away. These meetings allow us to get closer, learn about initiatives and then try to implement them in our service."

"This workshop sought to be an instance to generate learning about the culture and infrastructure that exists in the SLEPs to address the challenges in their territories. The value of the activity is that it is a space for collaboration supported by several institutions, to facilitate and guide the mobilization of knowledge among SLEPs, and thus contribute to the design of more agile responses in the territories. Continuing with this type of workshop can contribute to strengthening the public education system," said Mauricio Pino, researcher at the CIAE of the University of Chile.

This activity is a first workshop held within the framework of the Alliance for Public Education, in which the indicated institutions participate in conjunction with the Directorate of Public Education. It is hoped to continue developing similar activities for the benefit of the new school system in Chile.
